There is no better time than now to make sure that your vehicle is ready for the sun and warmer temperatures. While you may have a lot to do along the lines of Spring cleaning, the small amount of time it takes to give your vehicle the once over can save you a lot of time and money if your vehicle needs major repairs. Routine maintenance and minors repairs and not only a good way to assure that your vehicle will be ready when you are, but help it keeps its value as well.

  • Keep it Clean

Even if you are someone that likes to wash your vehicle yourself, taking your vehicle to a car wash for its inaugural Spring bath can get you off to a good start. When you wash your vehicle, chances are you do not crawl under it with a high-pressure spray to clean the underside, so let the car wash do it for you. Most car wash facilities have Spring specials that include an undercarriage wash as well as a “wax” that are well worth the money, even if you are the one that washes it until the snow flies again. Buildup of salt, sand and dirt can hold in moisture and cause rust and corrosion that is conveniently out of plain site. A quick run through the car wash can remove this build up, and the wax can give you a base until you can wax the vehicle yourself when the weather warms up sufficiently.

  • Clean Air is Important

Your vehicle likes to breathe as much as you do and a dirty air filter can lead to a decrease in gas mileage and damage to more expensive parts like oxygen sensors. If your vehicle is equipped with cabin air filters, a few months of the windows closed and the heat on can decrease their efficiency as well. Replacing the engine air filter is quick and inexpensive and can save you from much more costly repairs. If you choose to use a reusable air filter to increase performance, Spring is also a good time to perform its routine maintenance. If you are unsure if you vehicle has cabin air filters or where they are, consult your owner’s manual. These are usually to replace and inexpensive as well, you just need to follow the instructions. Clean air filters mean that both you and your vehicle will breathe easier and enjoy the fresh Spring air.

  • Make Sure You Have Plenty of Fluids

Just like humans, vehicles need to have the right amount of fluid as well. Just as you would not drink dirty water, your vehicle should not have dirty fluids either. Checking the fluids in your vehicle takes very little time, but they can be warning signals to bigger problems. The only fluid in your vehicle that does not present a problem if it is low is windshield washer fluid, all the rest should maintain a consistent level. A lack of fluids in your engine, transmission, radiator or master cylinder can mean serious problems with your vehicle. If you check the fluids and any of them are extremely low or smell or look strange, do not wait to get your vehicle checked out, do it as soon as possible.

  • Stay on the Straight and Narrow

Potholes are sometimes hard to avoid and they can cause serious damage to your vehicle’s suspension and brakes. It is always a good idea to have the front-end mechanics of your vehicle checked out by a certified technician once the road crews start filling the holes. If you use snow tires in winter, when you are ready to switch to your summer tires, ask your mechanic to give the mechanics a once over to make sure there is nothing that needs repair. They will also check your winter tires and summer tires for excessive wear or other issues that may be a sign of a bigger issue. Make sure before you take your vehicle in to make sure it does not need any other maintenance like an oil change, but if it does, save yourself some time and have it done all at one time.

  • De-Clutter Your Space

There is a mysterious force that turns a vehicle into a catchall when the weather turns cold. While the extra coat, sweater, sweatshirt or blanket are good to have if you are stranded in the snow, once the weather gets warm they just take up unnecessary space. Even your emergency kit in your trunk can be slimmed down a little, but make sure you check any food or water you have in it to make sure it is not expired. Even in Summer, you want to keep a couple granola bars or other long-lasting snack items and water in your vehicle just in case you need them. Once you de-clutter take the time to wipe down leather seating or vacuum cloth seats and the floor just to keep it looking good.

While taking time to make your vehicle look good could be spent on something else in the Spring weather, the long term benefits are well worth it. One of the easiest ways to retain or even increase the resale or trade-in value of your vehicle is to keep it well-maintained and looking good.
